Compare two PDFs

See what changed between two versions: removed words in red, added words in green, side by side, saved as a PDF.

Differences can be missed, or marked where there are none. Comparing by text uses the text stored in the PDF, so choose appearance for scans. Files without text are compared page number by page number, so there a page added or removed puts the pages after it out of step.

Your files are never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop the old version first, then the new one (use the arrows to swap them).
  2. Choose to compare the text, or the appearance (for scans and drawings).
  3. Press Run. Download the side-by-side PDF and the text file listing every change.

Questions and answers

What does the result look like?

One landscape page per page pair: the old page on the left, the new one on the right, with a header counting the changes. Removed words are shaded red, added words green.

The pages moved; does it still work?

Yes, when the pages have text: each page is set against the page most like it, so a page inserted shows as added, one taken out shows as removed, and the pages after it still meet their old selves. Scans without text are compared page number by page number.

Can it compare scans?

Choose Appearance: the two pages are laid over each other and the areas that differ are marked. To compare word by word, run Text recognition (OCR) on both files first.
